Chris Paschke has always surrounded herself with the creation of art, it”s in her blood. At age 5 she drew her first anatomically correct horse thanks to Walter Foster. In college, calligraphy, the art of the written word, became her destiny. First intrigued by traditional western lettering, historic alphabets, and illuminated manuscripts, her work was ultimately set free by studying with contemporary European master calligraphers in Belgium, Germany, Austria, Russia. Chris then visited China and so today her fascination for both Western and Eastern letterforms and brushwork has become a lifelong study. She is strongly influenced by both traditional Chinese masters and Japanese Sumi-e painting as well as her love for the abstract expressionism of Kline, Pollock, Rothko, Gottlieb, Motherwell and Jasper Johns, resulting in her own contemporary style. Her art is abstractly interpretive as she uses fluid watercolor washes, gesso, resist, text, encaustic, collaged paper or fabric, and accents of gold leaf to achieve her images.
